Dark Sky Backpacking in Gunnison Gorge


Did you know June is Colorado’s Dark Sky Month? Join us to backpack in to Gunnison Gorge NCA on June 7-8 to enjoy some of the darkest skies in the area!

Where: The Ute Trail in Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area

What: Colorado Canyons Association is excited to lead a Dark Sky backpacking trip into the stunning Gunnison Gorge Wilderness to experience incredible night sky viewing opportunities. Meet other night sky enthusiasts on this three-mile (one way) hike through the rugged, spectacular scenery of the Gorge and camp along the babbling Gunnison River. Stay up late for exceptionally dark skies and the stargazing they afford, as CMU Astronomy Professor Catherine Whiting leads a tour of the night sky. We will hike in a telescope for enhanced viewing opportunities and conduct dark sky quality monitoring as part of our efforts to certify Gunnison Gorge as an International Dark Sky Park. Our hike out will begin after breakfast on Saturday.

Please note the trail descends 1,200 feet on the hike in and gains that same amount on the hike out Round trip mileage is approximately 8 miles. Please assess your fitness before signing up for this trip.

Cost: $50; includes:

  • Guided backpacking trip led by CCA and BLM staff

  • Expert Astronomy guide

  • Special use fees for the area

  • Snacks, dinner, and breakfast provided

  • Transportation from Delta
