Come learn about how and why scientists monitor bats, how the Bureau of Land Management uses that data, then get a chance to identify bats on the fly!
When: Wednesday, August 5, 7-9 PM.
Where: Gunnison Forks in Gunnison Gorge NCA
What: Explore the diversity of bats in Colorado from certified International Dark Sky Park, Gunnison Gorge NCA! Join biologists from the BLM to learn about ongoing bat monitoring efforts and the technology that aids researchers in identification. After a presentation from Zane Siebeneck, BLM wildlife technician and MS student at Western Colorado University, we will break into groups to try out the process of utilizing ultrasonic microphones to identify bats - and if they're active, you’ll get a chance to listen yourself! Expect ~1/2 mile of walking.
Note: This event is timed to align with peak bat emergence, which begins about 30 minutes after sunset. We will begin walking around with the ultrasonic microphones at about 8:15. All ages are welcome, but the presentation will be best suited for ages ~10 and up. Participants are welcome to leave early if needed.
Please bring: A camp chair or blanket to sit on and a (preferably red light) headlamp or flashlight. You are welcome to bring snacks/dinner to picnic during the presentation portion of the evening!
We’ll provide: Light refreshments, camp chairs by request.
This event is free and open to the public. Please RSVP.
