Guided Hike: Sunset Rocks Geology GGNCA

Journey through geological time with us to discover the past environments and events that have shaped the landscape of Gunnison Gorge NCA as we know it today.


When: December 4th, 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM

Where: Sunset Rocks trailhead

What: Join CCA boardmember and professional geologist Mike Winter for a guided hike on the Sunset Rocks trail.

Gunnison Gorge NCA offers stunning scenic views that tell a story of monumental change over billions of years. We will be hiking the Sunset Rocks trail, learning about past environments and geological processes that created the formations evident today.

This hike is rated moderate due to elevation and distance. We expect to hike up to 4 miles total, and the trail will overall gain about 800 feet. Check out the route and elevation profile here

About the speaker

Mike Winter is a CCA Board member and long-term volunteer as Trail Ambassador and Public Outreach/Education instructor for school groups. He currently resides in Montrose. Mike is both a Geological Engineer and Civil Engineer who has been employed for over 40 years as an engineering consultant focused on mining-related projects extending from mine planning and permitting through closure. He has gained working knowledge of western Colorado geology through his education and work experience in closure and cleanup of abandoned uranium mines.
