Become a Citizen Scientist!

Want to get involved with monitoring your favorite trails and campsites in the National Conservation Areas? In partnership with the BLM and Leave No Trace, you can become a Citizen Scientist in a few easy steps!

What is a Citizen Scientist and what will i be monitoring?

A citizen scientist is any member of the public who gathers data to help inform the research of scientists, managers, decision-makers, and more. Data can be collected on a wide variety of topics, but in our case it’s all connected to our local landscapes. Hikers, boaters, ATVers, and public land enthusiasts can all take part in helping collect information on the landscapes that they love.

With hundreds of thousands of acres of land throughout the three National Conservation Areas, there are a lot of areas to keep track of! To help inform BLM land managers about the conditions of the NCAs, we need your help collecting data on:

  • Leave No Trace Information

  • Litter and Waste

  • Trail Conditions

  • Campsite Conditions

With this data, the BLM will be able to make better-informed management decisions based off of the current conditions of the NCAs. It will help prioritize volunteer and stewardship efforts to ensure our public lands are being taken care of.
